A number of people expressed concern when Intuit dropped the Quicken and TaxCalc product ranges earlier this year. On more than one occasion we heard, “Will it be QuickBooks next?”.   Well, we have been assured by Intuit that they are fully committed to developing the QuickBooks brand in the UK so we think that everyone should be able to breathe easy for the foreseeable future! 

Another issue that crops up all the time is the Intuit “sunset policy” which means that older versions of QuickBooks cease to be supported or flat out don’t work anymore!  Our advice on this is simple: 

If you use the Payroll service you MUST be using the current or previous version of QuickBooks.   So at the moment only people using QuickBooks 2004 or 2006 will be able to use payroll. 

If you do NOT use the Payroll service then life is slightly easier and you can probably get away with only renewing QuickBooks every three years.   So if you are currently using QuickBooks 2002 or older we would suggest you seriously consider an upgrade.   Don’t forget that the operating system you use, the hardware you run and the QuickBooks version are all factors and if you leave it too long you will find it very hard to keep your old data.
